Because June is designated as Gay Pride Month, Hypeful received the suggestion to commemorate the occasion by showcasing some tunes from our favorite gay musicians. Always up for doing a themed post, Hypeful accepted the challenge and passes the songs on to you. Yes - bisexual David Bowie is married to a woman, Mika is mum about his sexuality, and there’s still some contentions about who makes Morrissey so bloody miserable. However, we’ve gone ahead and included them in our musical parade.

While you’re enjoying the tunes, you might want to brush up on how gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered persons have influenced music beyond this list.

  7. Thanks for the kind words and suggestions, everyone! The influences on music made by gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered persons has been tremendous. I would love to compile and share a more comprehensive collection, but such an ambitious project would require more than one post.

    Additionally, any exclusion of gay artists of color was completely unintentional. (Although, I’d like to point out that Kele Okereke of Bloc Party is black, Mika is Lebanese, and Freddie Mercury of Queen was Indian.) I had so much fun putting together this post, I’m going to attempt a similiar one in honor of Black Music Month.

    Again, sorry I couldn’t include more musicians! However, I love your feedback and please continue to share other artists I was unable to spotlight.

  12. Thank you for _not_ putting up the same tired GLBT artists but showing that queer musicians can be relevant and current. Not just hashing out the same old true colors [sorry, Cynd] for the pink love shack. Question though, is that Jamie Stewart [of Xiu Xiu] in the first image? And who’s that smokin’ hottie in the second? Looks like Sufjan on testosterone or something. Great post though. I’m seriously about the thank you for not posting “pride” music. Ugh. That shit is tired and lame.

    @ RSL: Thanks! The first guy is Daniel Rossen of Grizzly Bear (he’s also part of a duo named Department of Eagles). The rest of Grizzly Bear are gay as well, but I couldn’t fit them into the pic.
