Alex Turner Recording “Surprise” Album

Alex Turner Miles Kane form new band

According to NME, Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner and The Rascals‘ Miles Kane are set to record an album together this month that is expected to drop in the first half of 2008 (after The Rascals have released their debut album). Kane contributed guitar to Arctic Monkeys’ most recent album, Favourite Worst Nightmare, and has joined the band live frequently this summer.

The duo are still trying to work out what to name their sideproject, but are considering calling themselves Turner & Kane (which kind of sounds like the best cop TV series never made). After bending an ear to The Rascals, it sounds like the pair will be a natural fit and have no problems cranking out an interesting album. If not, I’d love to pitch a TV pilot about buddy cops with them…

The Flaming Lips Tulsa DFEST

The Flaming Lips were recently included in Rolling Stone’s Top 10 Best Live Bands Playing Right Now with good cause and it’s difficult to say whether their Friday night performance meant that the Sixth Annual DFEST was starting off with a bang or reaching an early climax. Anyone who has seen The Lips perform live know that they can be a tough act to follow. The band’s arsenal of live performance tricks includes landing in a massive UFO, an army of fans in Martian/Santa/Superhero costumes, streamers, strobes, smoke machines, balloons, and jaw-dropping amounts of confetti blasting from cannons - and that’s before the first song has even finished. Most bands build up to this sort of explosive spectacle, but for the Lips, it’s a starting point. So if follows that perhaps DFEST was employing a Lip-esque strategy by having the most bombastic band in their lineup play midway through the festival.
