Free Download - Wes Anderson’s Hotel Chevalier

Hotel Chevalier Wes Anderson Jason Schwartzman Natalie Portman

Hotel Chevalier, the thirteen-minute short film that acts as a prologue to Wes Anderson’s upcoming feature The Darjeeling Limited, is being offered as a free download from iTunes! This is great because Chevalier will tragically not, according to trade reports, be shown in theatres along with Darjeeling as it was originally intended. It’s strange to see modern technology like iPods and flatscreen TVs in Anderson’s normally timeless world, but the short is unmistakably his fine auteurist work - the yellow hotel room with a great view, a naked/bruised Natalie Portman, Peter Sarstedt’s “Where Do You Go To My Lovely?”, and dialogue that is deadpan and distinct (”Barbara in the lobby.”). The video download link is below along with a repost of Sarstedt’s song (which you’ll certainly want on your iPod after watching Chevalier).

Bloc Party @ House of Blues (Dallas, TX) 9/22/07

Bloc Party Live House of Blues Dallas Kele Okereke Matt Tong

A long delay taking the stage might have been the first indicator that not all was right in the world of Bloc Party on Saturday night. However, it wasn’t until midway through their set that it became fully apparent that something was off. Which isn’t to say Bloc Party’s show was bad. In fact, I begin my review with this as a testament to the band’s perseverance over difficulties to deliver a solid show.

Band to Watch: Cheyenne

Cheyenne

After releasing their debut LP I Am Haunted, I Am Alive in 2005, Cheyenne quickly began gathering attention from their home base in Norman, Oklahoma. However, the following year brought big changes to the band: a relocation to Brooklyn, a solidified lineup, and naturally, a new group of songs. Building on their debut album (and the subsequent The Land Rush EP), Cheyenne is out to use past difficulties – relocation, lineup changes, freak weather delaying cross-country recording – as fuel for their brand new album The Whale due out December 8.

Having listened to a solid chunk of The Whale, it’s safe to say Cheyenne has raised the bar for themselves and crafted a collection of solid pop rock songs. Their rolling tunes are filled with down home harmonies and tinged by upbeat accents like handclaps(!), prancing piano, and shimmery sleigh bells. It’s difficult to believe that this band is currently unsigned - The Whale is a very positive indicator of Cheyenne’s talents and promising future.

New British Sea Power - “Atom”

British Sea Power

“Atom,” the first leak from British Sea Power’s forthcoming “Krankenhaus?” EP, hit the internets today. BSP’s Yan had the following to say about the song:

“Atom is both a vague and precise song concerned with the confusion of modern living, where over analysis can lead to more questions than answers, whether its relationships or quantum theory. i heard on the radio only the other night that something which seperates humans from other mammals is the ability to ask why. but is this ability a blessing or a curse? and what kind of meaningless over inteligent black hole can this leave you in. personally i dont get it.”

Luckily, no background in quantum theory is needed to actually enjoy the song.
