M.I.A. is m-a-d at MTV…and the Late Show with David Letterman. The sound causing the fury seems to stem from her song and video for “Paper Planes.” M.I.A. has has posted on her official blog that MTV sabotaged her, after the company screened a heavily-censored version of her new video for “Paper Planes”. It seems M.I.A. was infuriated to learn that the Viacom-owned channel changed the sound of her vocals and edited out the sound of gunshots featured in the song. The singer also used her post to attack the Late Show With David Letterman, which approved her version of the tune in a sound check, but aired a different version when she performed it live earlier this year. Want to know what Bill Murray whispered to Scarlett Johansson at the end of Lost in Translation? He didn’t reveal that he was actually a ghost or that Gwyneth Paltrow’s head was in the box. The classic ending may be better left up to your imagination, but if you must know you’ll be happy that someone has digitally processed the scene to reveal Murray’s whisper. Personally, I dig his final lines but want to know what you think. (Thanks to Pop Candy for the heads up…)

I’m very excited to introduce my good friend and first-time Hypeful contributor Brian Rhea to the site. Brian is an art teacher in Carrollton, TX and blogs with his friends over at Those Awake. After checking out Iron & Wine’s show in Dallas earlier this week, Brian was awesome enough to pass along his review on the show:

If you’re going to an Iron & Wine concert (or just about any hipster concert for that matter), you can bank on a couple of things:

1: Someone in the opening band will be sporting one of these.
2: There will be a pleasant abundance of wool in the audience in the form of scarfs, bags, and straight-out-of-gramma’s-closet beanies.
3: Vegas puts the odds that you’ll be standing in front of two gearheads analyzing the bands’ equipment between sets at 2:1. This is a safe bet (and remember, always double down on 11). For extra fun, take one drink every time you hear, “Dude, I don’t know what that is, but I want one!” Two more drinks when the counterpart gives an answer.

These pseudo-requirements were all present and accounted for when the folk rockers recently rolled in to Dallas, and after the show it would be safe to add:

4: Concert-goers will have a deeper appreciation for The Shepherd’s Dog and will likely listen to little else in the days and weeks to come.

As easily one of 2007’s most covered artists, perhaps there’s a little Amy Winehouse in all of us. After all, it seems like just about everyone was clamoring to do their best Winehouse this year (except for Winehouse herself, who sadly had to cancel her tour). I’m not just talking about the bad behavior of celebrities. Winehouse seemed to have an omnipresence in the realm of this year’s cover tunes as musician after musician covered tracks from her Grammy-nominated album (with perhaps no track being more popular to redo than “Rehab”). To help you make peace with your inner-Winehouse, Hypeful has compiled the seven best covers of her music from 2007.
