After last year’s jaw-dropping finale and months of anticipation, Lost finally returns tonight to start its fourth season. To celebrate and help get you ready for tonight’s premiere episode, Hypeful has put together a musical playlist for 10 of the mysterious island’s key players based on songs important to them throughout the series. There have been so many musical references and cues peppered throughout Lost’s storytelling, it seems like almost every character has some kind of musical connection and it was difficult to focus on just a few (sadly, Geronimo Jackson didn’t make the cut).
Also, if you’ve already watched “Everything You Need to Know about Lost in 8 Minutes and 15 Seconds” and want more priming about previous Lost events, Hypeful recommends this well-edited clip that synchronizes the events of the plane crash from multiple angles.

Last week, Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner and Lightspeed Champion’s Dev Hynes peformed together at London’s White Heat as indie supergroup The Pun Lovin’ Criminals. The pair played a covers set featuring Interpol and The Vines, but the highlight of the evening was apparently their performance of The Strokes’ “Reptilia.” For those of us who weren’t there, video of the occasion has thankfully made it onto the internets. While watching the vid, make sure to check out the blasé security guard’s reaction to the distractingly rowdy crowd of limbs and flying fluids.

New tracks from The Morning Benders‘ upcoming debut full-length, Talking Through Tin Cans, have begun popping up and it sounds like the Berkeley-based quartet is set to deliver on the promise of their two very fine and shiny EPs. On “Crosseyed,” the breezy fifth track from their forthcoming album, The Morning Benders’ knack for catchy, youthful melodies is packed into a three-minute pop gem you won’t want (or be able) to shake.

Bleep-pop maestro Cassettes Won’t Listen (i.e., Jason Drake) is clearly skilled at blending electronic and indie rock. Responsible for remixing diverse artists (such as Aesop Rock and Midlake) and releasing an EP of choice covers, CWL is preparing to drop his first physical release - an EP entitled Small Time Machine (March 11th). Check out the dreamy first single, “Paper Float,” from CWL’s upcoming release below. Also, if you’re new to CWL or would just like to hear more of his electro-pop tunes, his One Alternative EP of covers is still available as a free download.

After months of relentless (and well-deserved) hype, Vampire Weekend finally dropped their debut album yesterday. With bets already being placed on when the inevitable buzz-band backlash will hit these young upstarts, now is a great time to check out the trailer for VW frontman Ezra Koenig’s amateur film that inspired the band’s moniker and started it all. The preview raises more questions than answers (werewolf masks, Rod Stewart’s “I Am Sailing,” and Ra Ra Riot’s Wesley Miles all make appearances), but Hypeful would still love to see a Grindhouse-style Vampire Weekend / Christmas On Mars double-feature someday.

Quick follow-up to yesterday’s post and good news for anyone with ears! An 11th hour decision by the executive committee of the music branch of the Academy decided that in spite of some questions about the validity of “Falling Slowly,” the song is an eligible nominee for best original song. Huzzah!

A scant two years after the phrase “Academy Award-winners Three 6 Mafia” was born, this year’s Oscar music categories have tragically ruled Jonny Greenwood’s There Will Be Blood score ineligible and ignored Eddie Vedder’s Into the Wild contributions altogether. Now there’s speculation that “Falling Slowly”, written by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, from Once may be ruled ineligible for best original song. The problem stems from the song appearing on two albums (The Swell Season and The Cost) before the movie’s release — a seemingly big no-no according to Academy rules, which state: “An original song consists of words and music, both of which are original and written specifically for the film.” This leaves two big questions remaining:
1. Was “Falling Slowly” written for the movie specifically and then ended up on CDs as the film was being gradually released?
2. Seriously, three song nominations for Enchanted?!?!

The new Gnarls Barkley disc doesn’t drop until April, but Mission Freak has scored a new cut from the album called “Run.” Rolling Stone may not have found anything as indelible as “Crazy” on Gnarls’ new album, but “Run” makes you wonder if maybe they’re just - (wait for it) - crazy. “Run” is a frenetically fun and upbeat first taste of the sounds that Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse will likely bring to your party playlists in 2008. Grab it below and give it a spin, kids!

There’s been a lot of famous fannies associated with The Strokes, but perhaps the most famous is the posterior that graced the British cover of their first album, Is This It. Now, the model/buttocks-owner and her story have been revealed…in video form, nonetheless. While it’s not the greatest rock mystery to ever be solved, props to Goldenfiddle for rippin’ the lid off it!!!

If the Lord of the Flies kids would’ve had acid instead of a conch shell, they may have been able to experience the psychedelic splendor that is MGMT’s new video for “Time to Pretend.” MGMT has assembled a visual kaleidoscope of light spectrum surfing, zebra hunting, kittens, Mayan temples, and much more - it definitely merits repeat viewings. Check it out below! (Thanks to Salad Days Music for the heads up!)
