A scant two years after the phrase “Academy Award-winners Three 6 Mafia” was born, this year’s Oscar music categories have tragically ruled Jonny Greenwood’s There Will Be Blood score ineligible and ignored Eddie Vedder’s Into the Wild contributions altogether. Now there’s speculation that “Falling Slowly”, written by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, from Once may be ruled ineligible for best original song. The problem stems from the song appearing on two albums (The Swell Season and The Cost) before the movie’s release — a seemingly big no-no according to Academy rules, which state: “An original song consists of words and music, both of which are original and written specifically for the film.” This leaves two big questions remaining:
1. Was “Falling Slowly” written for the movie specifically and then ended up on CDs as the film was being gradually released?
2. Seriously, three song nominations for Enchanted?!?!

1Long given up trying to figure out the Oscars or any awards show nomination process. It’s subjective at best and hopelessly archaic at worst. It’s like when Desperate Housewives have five actresses nominated for an Emmy or something. You wonder if anyone even watches or listens to the music and movies in their own industry.
