Hypeful About Lost

Lost Season 4 Four Songs

After last year’s jaw-dropping finale and months of anticipation, Lost finally returns tonight to start its fourth season. To celebrate and help get you ready for tonight’s premiere episode, Hypeful has put together a musical playlist for 10 of the mysterious island’s key players based on songs important to them throughout the series. There have been so many musical references and cues peppered throughout Lost’s storytelling, it seems like almost every character has some kind of musical connection and it was difficult to focus on just a few (sadly, Geronimo Jackson didn’t make the cut).

Also, if you’ve already watched “Everything You Need to Know about Lost in 8 Minutes and 15 Seconds” and want more priming about previous Lost events, Hypeful recommends this well-edited clip that synchronizes the events of the plane crash from multiple angles.

Lost Hurley
CHARACTER NAME:
Hugo “Hurley” Reyes

MP3:
Damien Rice - “Delicate”

EPISODE:
“…In Translation” (Season 1, Episode 17)

RELEVANCE OF SONG:
“Delicate” was the last song Hurley was able to listen to on his CD player before his last batteries went dead. At the end of last season, viewers began to see a less-delicate and more assertive Hurley step up into place as an island leader.

Lost Ben
CHARACTER NAME:
Ben Linus

MP3:
Three Dog Night - “Shambala”

EPISODE:
“The Man Behind the Curtain” (Season 3, Episode 20)

RELEVANCE OF SONG:
Before a young Ben gassed and killed his father, “Shambala” is heard playing in the Volkswagen van they were riding in together. The song itself touches on one of the show’s big themes - fate versus free will.

Lost Claire
CHARACTER NAME:
Claire Littleton

MP3:
Driveshaft - “You All Everybody”

EPISODE:
“The Moth” (Season 1, Episode 7)

RELEVANCE OF SONG:
Currently unaware of Charlie’s death, his former band’s only hit song makes one wonder how Claire will react to his sacrifice.

Lost Desmond
CHARACTER NAME:
Desmond David Hume

MP3:
Cass Elliott - “Make Your Own Kind of Music”

EPISODE:
“Man of Science, Man of Faith” (Season 2, Episode 1)

RELEVANCE OF SONG:
Effectively introducing Desmond, he played this song on vinyl while going through his day to day routine of life in the Hatch at the beginning of season 2.

Lost Jack
CHARACTER NAME:
Jack Shephard

MP3:
Nirvana - “Scentless Apprentice”

EPISODE:
“Through the Looking Glass” (Season 3, Episode 22)

RELEVANCE OF SONG:
As future Jack drove to the funeral for the viewing of an unknown person, this song can be heard playing inside of his car.

Lost Juliet
CHARACTER NAME:
Juliet Burke

MP3:
Petula Clark - “Downtown”

EPISODE:
“A Tale of Two Cities” (Season 3, Episode 1)

RELEVANCE OF SONG:
Effectively introducing Juliet, she put this song on while upset and preparing for a book club in the season 3 premiere. Will Juliet be one of the Oceanic 6 who gets to see a downtown again?

Lost Kate
CHARACTER NAME:
Kate Austen

MP3:
Patsy Cline - “Walkin’ After Midnight”

EPISODE:
“What Kate Did” (Season 2, Episode 9)

RELEVANCE OF SONG:
Kate played this song on the Swan record player as she tended to an unconscious Sawyer. The song has appeared three times in Lost and some have even suggested it’s Kate’s “theme”.

Lost Locke
CHARACTER NAME:
John Locke

MP3:
Muddy Waters - “I Feel Like Going Home”

EPISODE:
“Orientation” (Season 2, Episode 3)

RELEVANCE OF SONG:
This song is heard playing in Locke’s truck when he picks up Eddie. Contrary to the title of this song, Locke seems to be one of the only Oceanic 815 survivors who doesn’t feel like going home.

Lost Sawyer
CHARACTER NAME:
James “Sawyer” Ford

MP3:
Bob Marley - “Redemption Song”

EPISODE:
“Exodus” (Season 1, Episode 24)

RELEVANCE OF SONG:
Sawyer sings a few verses of this song while on the raft at the end of season one, perplexing Michael more than a little. Additionally, executive producer Carlton Cuse has admitted that redemption is a major theme of Lost - a goal that has been achieved by some, but still remains a task for others.

Lost Sayid
CHARACTER NAME:
Sayid Jarrah

MP3:
Charles Trenet - “La Mer”

EPISODE:
“Whatever the Case May Be” (Season 1, Episode 12)

RELEVANCE OF SONG:
Sayid and Shannon’s relationship started when he asked her to help him translate Rousseau’s notes, which Shannon recognized as being from this song.

  1. This is good stuff. Any thoughts on the new episode? Anyone?

  2. Great episode and great music for the characters. I love that the suspense now comes from the clues dropped in the future about what happened in the past, er, present?

The change up has totally elevated it to new heights…

  3. I loved the ep - I was shocked to hear so many people were bored by it. Nice to see Lost moving in a decidedly dark direction. I hear next week’s “flashback”/”flashforward” is going to focus on “the rescuers”!!!
