Rick Astley has opened up to LA Times and proves himself surprisingly hip about the second coming of his song “Never Gonna Give You Up” and the phenomenon of the “Rickroll.” (Mmmmmm…rickroll….) It’s definitely worth a read. Speaking of the 80’s, check out this exclusive video of Arcade Fire covering the The A-Team theme!

The Raconteurs released a music video for “Salute Your Solution” today to accompany the release of their new album, Consolers Of The Lonely. The vid is comprised of over 2500 different black & white photographs of the band doing their thing in the studio.

Combine stop-motion animation with paper cutouts done by hand and voila - you got yr. new Spoon video! The beautiful 3-minute video project for “You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb” is a collaboration between frontman Britt Daniel, Phillip Niemeyer of Double Triple, and Ryan Junell. The video has two sites of interest - its own page where you can view the eye candy in gorgeous hi-res QuickTime and another where you can check out behind-the-scenes stills of the clip’s process. Nice.

R.E.M.’s new record isn’t coming out until April 1st (almost beating Michael Stipe in coming out, actually), but Accelerate is streaming online until March 26th. The album has received some supernatural superserious kudos from Spin and Rolling Stone, with the latter calling it “one of the best records R.E.M. have ever made.” Clocking in at only 34 minutes, it’s most definitely worth your time.

Now that Jenny is using 867-5309 to make telemarketing calls, you’re probably in need of a new phone number to add to your rock & roll-odex. Luckily, the Black Lips have started their own hotline to help out those that are “in trouble, need advice, or are just plain lonely.” Simply dial or text 949-836-7407 and, in the unlikely event you miss the busy signal, you should be greeted by either Cole, Jared, Ian or Joe. Tell ‘em Hypeful says, “Hi!”

Both a personal favorite of Hypeful and one of the best live bands currently touring, Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers are set to release Turbo Ocho (April 29th) - a reality-recording experiment where the band set a goal to create and share, from inspiration to the final mix, 8 songs in 8 days. RCPM chronicled the project back in January with daily audio and video episodes from the studio they set up in a seaside home in Rocky Point, Mexico. The Ocho eps are still online for your viewing pleasure and now you can stream some songs from the project on RCPM’s MySpace page before the album is released next month.

Despite Punxsutawney Phil’s best efforts, yesterday was officially the first day of spring! So, it’s appropriate of the occasion that Elefant frontman Diego Garcia has released a demo of “Warm Winter Day,” the title track of his first solo record set for release at the end of this year. Garcia was inspired to write the song after an unusually warm day (83 degrees, to be exact) in NYC last December. Who knew global warming could inspire something so lovely?

MGMT’s Andrew Van Wyngarden and of Montreal’s Kevin Barnes have collaborated to form a new side project called Blikk Fang. The duo began recording after their bands toured together earlier this year and their album is scheduled to drop in August. In the meantime, they’ve released two tracks below for your listening pleasure (one of which, “Nupital Eagles Sharpened”, is a cover of The Misfits’ “Where Eagles Dare”).
UPDATE: Oops - we’ve been duped! Thanks to Max for pointing out that the below songs were mislabeled and sorry for the confusion!
MP3s:
Blikk Fang - “(Just A Little) Judas Tonic”
MGMT - “Just Becuz”
Blikk Fang - “Nupital Eagles Sharpened”
Of Montreal - “Where Eagles Dare (The Misfits cover)”

Katy Perry has just dropped her new video for “Ur So Gay,” featuring a pair of star-crossed dolls drinking vegan coffee, fretting over their “FaceSpace” pages, and gettin’ it on! Watch it ASAP - because Mattel doesn’t take too kindly to seeing Barbie bimbo it up in music videos…
(Also, remember that time Amy Poehler took us into the sordid lives inside Barbie’s dreamhouse? Awesome.)

For his debut recording as an artist, producer/engineer Robin Danar assembled a distinctive group of musicians (both known and emerging) to help him reimagine a set of mostly well-known songs. Inspired by rapidly blurring lines between musical genres and roles (i.e., fans creating their own re-mixes mash-ups), Danar is attempting to reinvent songs rather than just cover them on Altered States. For example, check out the surprising collaboration between Pete Yorn and Kinky doing an electro-rock reconstruction of Bill Withers’ funky “Use Me.”
