Colin Meloy @ The Granada Theater (Dallas, TX) 4/8/08

Colin Meloy is on a mission, and this time it has nothing to do with The Colbert Report. He’s on a mission to bring the sweet sounds of Sam Cooke, Morrissey, and an occasional Smiths tune to those who love The Decemberists. Of course most of the solo tour is Decemberists music, but for 3 years, Colin Meloy has made a habit of playing solo shows and cutting solo EP’s that are melodic, stylized versions of artists he strongly admires. This year is a bit different. With the Kill Rock Stars release of Colin Meloy Sings Live! In the words of the man himself, “what better way to promote this album then to sing . . . live.”
April 8th, Meloy played The Granada Theater in Dallas, and while it wasn’t the smoothest of beginnings, the evening progressed into a playful exchange between Meloy and audience. After about 5 minutes of Meloy looking at the stagehands struggle to raise the screen in front of the stage, Meloy finally said “I’ll be back in a minute.”

Once the screen was taken care of, the banter began. Even while under the weather, Meloy’s ease in conversation is what makes him one of the most endearing front men in music today. With just his voice and a guitar, the audience remained in the palm of his hand for the entire evening. Only moments of singing along and huge cheers after each song interrupted the silence and reverence for the artist on stage.

Meloy put on an incredible show, traveling from Decemberists to Tarkio to Sam Cooke to personal songs that I have never heard. This was one of the most genuine performances to grace the Dallas scene in a very long time, and we thank him.
