You may have noticed that Hypeful was down for a couple of hours today courtesy of Katy Perry and her representatives at the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI). It seems Katy/IFPI were not happy with Hypeful hosting a remix of one of Perry’s songs, which was previously available as a free download from Perry’s very own MySpace page. Rather than contact me personally to remove the track in question, they went directly to my hosting provider and had my site suspended - not cool.
Hypeful’s primary purpose is to help spread the love and good word about artists and their work that I think others would enjoy. Based on my experiences in the past year, I have to say that I’ve found that 95% of the musicians featured on Hypeful and their representation have been extremely great and cooperative towards my site. Accordingly, whenever someone has had a problem with the materials that appear on Hypeful (which is rare), I have honored their requests and worked in an expedite manner to rectify the situation.
I like to keep things, well, hypeful on Hypeful, so I hope you will pardon my ranting. I’ve had similarly absurd experiences with other artists and I know other blogs that have had to deal with these ongoing and ridiculous anti-piracy tactics. (Last month, Berkeley Place did an ace job of addressing this topic!)
Although Hypeful is back up and running, I still feel this situation has left a bit of a quandary for this site in preventing further host take-downs and dealing with non-cooperative artists. For the time being and per the IFPI’s requests, you can obviously expect a lot less love for Katy Perry around these parts. I’m going to grab a beverage and cool down, but may have more to add to the the topic later on.
Thanks for your support of Hypeful and allowing me a bit of time on the ol’ soapbox!

1thanks for the link. ms. perry is on a major label, so she should get no blog love. unless all bloggers unite on this, we will all each be susceptible to attacks and we will all together be the target of RIAA/IFPI broad attacks, which I predict will eventually lead either to legislation or regulation from the government.

2The IFPI did the same thing to me when I posted a Santogold Remix. I checked the RIAARadar and it said she was safe. It does piss you off though. They could email me as easily as they emailed my hosting provider. I would have taken it down in a heartbeat. Stupid RIAA/IFPI.

6I took the liberty of making a notation on Katy Perry’s Wikipedia page.
It lasted a couple of days until (I’m assuming) her people decided to remove all negative remarks.
These guys suck.
We should all seriously develop a list of “Artists that Will No Longer be Blogged About” so that we can have some sort of an impact on these dicks.

7I think you guys are way overreacting. I doubt it was her who actually shut it down. Record labels hate when they don’t get money for their “product” aka the artist. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t cool for them to suspend your site, but I think you’re taking it a little far by blaming it on her and saying that you’re not going to support her anymore. I for one love her songs and plan to buy her CD when it comes out. Lighten up please.

Unfortunately, as other bloggers and myself have discovered, there’s some reps out there (the other 5% or so) who are increasingly aggressive and inexplicably nasty towards sites like mine. I obviously enjoyed Katy and was upset to discover that she’s represented by the aforementioned 5%. With so many great bands out there that Hypeful could cover, I would simply rather spend my time and energy devoted to writing about them rather than having to deal with the headaches and frustration of just attempting to keep my site online (trust me-getting it back was an ordeal).

10I saw Katy Perry at warped tour. She was good, but no where near as good as the Dollyrots or even Julliet and the licks.
I made the mistake of waiting an hour in line for her signing. (I bought her CD before hand.) The Staff person ordered everyone to stand in single file, which proved to be impossible, since it required people to move back and they weren’t. Then it was announced that Katy will sign only one item, (that’s reasonable.) and that pictures can only be taken with Katy as she signs. five minutes later, Katy decided no pictures at all.
I wondered why the hell did I waste my ten dollars on her CD? I ended up leaving the line and throwing her CD in the garbage. (I should have taken it into the porta potty and tossed it with the other crap.)
I think the only reason Katy Perry is where she is now is that she made a deal with the Devil. Satan will help her music career, in exchange for Katy to be the mother of the Antichrist. (I wouldn’t be surprised if her first born had the number 666 in his or her scalp.) (okay, I was only kidding about this one. )
Case in point, Katy Perry, you are no Kelly Ogden or Julliet Lewis!
