Max Vernon Covers Katy Perry’s “I Kissed A Girl”

Despite ongoing stories of Katy Perry’s uncoolness, Hypeful is temporarily suspending its musical fatwā against her to offer you Max Vernon’s doo wop/jazz cover of her single “I Kissed A Girl.” It’s great to hear a guy tackle this song and you’ve got to admire Vernon’s chutzpah for really going after it. (Get ready, the song really hits its full synth-stride at the midpoint!) If you dig this, Vernon has more MP3s for your downloading pleasure on his MySpace page - which means he probably won’t be sending the IFPI after you like certain other girl-kissers I can think of…*cough cough* Enjoy!

Male cover artist is the first thing I thought when I hear this song, right after “how obnoxious and distasteful and I wish college weren’t middle class institutions &c”
The problem is that that max vernon is not masculine at all.
Are you being daft? Max Vernon’s “lack of masculineness” is what makes it so wonderful! Katy Perry singing about kissing a girl is a stupid grasp at subversiveness, a desperate attempt to be “controversial”. She ends up looking like the sad girl at the keg party doing too many Jell-O shots making out with all her friends hoping someone will find it titillating.
BUT Max Vernon, with his show-quality voice, singing this song… Suddenly everything that the song sets out to achieve is accomplished. A delightful play on gender and sexuality, who would believe a “bro” singing about some girl’s cherry chapstick?
Max Vernon not being “masculine at all” (not going to even touch the ignorant and insulting phrasing) is not its detriment but in fact the very thing that makes this cover so perfect.
Poor Katy Perry with her Perez Hilton backing is going to have to find a better way to be relevant and controversial. She could always just kiss a girl.
[...] you dug Max Vernon’s doo wop/jazz cover of Katy Perry’s “I Kissed A Girl” (and how could you not?), you’ll want to watch Vernon engage in some Benny Hill-style girl [...]
i perfer his cover over hers. he accomplishes what the song is trying to get across. she really does come off as a little drunk girl, where as he comes off as someone who really … idk. i like his better.
Omw ! guys stop it with the hate! Both are really good and i love them both
