Max Vernon Katy Perry I Kissed A Girl Cover

Despite ongoing stories of Katy Perry’s uncoolness, Hypeful is temporarily suspending its musical fatwā against her to offer you Max Vernon’s doo wop/jazz cover of her single “I Kissed A Girl.” It’s great to hear a guy tackle this song and you’ve got to admire Vernon’s chutzpah for really going after it. (Get ready, the song really hits its full synth-stride at the midpoint!) If you dig this, Vernon has more MP3s for your downloading pleasure on his MySpace page - which means he probably won’t be sending the IFPI after you like certain other girl-kissers I can think of…*cough cough* Enjoy!

Mr. Spriggs Barbeque BBQ Will Ferrell Commerical Oklahoma City Funny Or Die Funnyordie Commerical Midwest City Television Jingle Song Meat Falls Off The Bone

On Funny Or Die, Will Ferrell has picked a local commercial by Oklahoma City’s very-own Mr. Spriggs BBQ as his favorite video of the week! Writing on his site, Ferrell says:

Why I love it:
Usually even a good commercial makes me think “Yeah, right. Of course you’re saying that. You wanna sell your thing.” This video makes me want to move to Oklahoma and eat Mr. Spriggs for breakfast, lunch, dinner and Taco Bell fourth meal. Enjoy the joy.

If you ever want to visit OKC, Will, consider this an open invitation - you’ve got a place to stay and the ribs are on me! Move over, Chris Brown - this commercial may be the hottest slow jam of the summer and it’s just begging for a remix! (Thanks to Heath for the heads up!)

The Last Shadow Puppets Jack White Glastonbury 2008 Miles Kane Alex Turner TLSP Live Billy Fury Wondrous Place cover Festival

Speaking of Alex Turner’s music collaborations, I’d be remiss not to mention that Arctic Monkey-fan and fellow side-project enthusiast Jack White appeared out of nowhere to play a few bars during The Last Shadow Puppets’ surprise set at Glastonbury over the weekend. White joined the duo for a keyboard-led cover of Billy Fury’s “Wondrous Place.” Miles Kane explained the guest stint by saying they had simply bumped into White backstage. “We just asked him and he said yes,” said Kane. “I had to play him the song on my iPod so he could learn it.” Check out the videos and MP3s below!

Arctic Monkeys The Kills Alex Turner Alison Mosshart collaboration Collaborating Domino The Fire And The Thud Last Shadow Puppets Electric Boogaloo

In a joint interview with Xfm, Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner and The Kills’ Alison Mosshart revealed that they’ve been working on a new track entitled “The Fire And The Thud” together. The song was previously performed on Jonathon Ross’s BBC radio show and subsequently recorded by Turner before he sent it to Domino label mate Mosshart to add her vocals separately. No word on when and where the track will turn up, but the duo did hint that further collaborations could be in their future. In the meantime, Turner looks to be a busy Monkey this summer - the A-Monks are set to reconvene this month to begin writing their third album while his other band, The Last Shadow Puppets, are set to kick off their first tour in August .

David Bowie

Those lucky Brits! Prince gave away his new CD for free in U.K. newspapers last summer and this past Sunday’s Daily Mail came with a free 12-track Bowie compilation handpicked by The Man Who Fell to Earth himself. (Americans have to settle with finding only coupons and Parade magazine in their newspapers…) Even better, Bowie wrote the accompanying liner notes about each song, which you can now read online. The 12 songs he discusses are:

“Life On Mars”
“Sweet Thing/ Candidate/ Sweet Thing”
“The Bewlay Brothers”
“Lady Grinning Soul”
“Win”
“Some Are”
“Teenage Wildlife”
“Repetition”
“Fantastic Voyage”
“Loving The Alien”
“Time Will Crawl”
“Hang On To Yourself (live)”

Carl Barât Pete Doherty The Libertines Dirty Pretty Things Musical Carl Barat

Carl Barât has announced that he and former Libertine bandmate Pete Doherty won’t be working on a musical together, after all. Barât said, “I haven’t seen Pete for donkeys. The musical is off – the window closes. I’m too busy concentrating on my other projects right now.” Bummer - at least there are still those Belle & Sebastian and Franz Ferdinand musicals and Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots on Broadway to look forward to, right?

Jay-Z Glastonbury 2008 Wonderwall Oasis cover 99 Problems

Jay-Z’s top-billing at Glastonbury 2008 notoriously upset Noel Gallagher of Oasis, who implied having hip-hop at the festival was “wrong“. Over the weekend, Jay-Z finally got the chance to respond to the criticism by kicking off his setlist wearing a Gallagher-esque parka and covering “Wonderwall.” Later in his set, HOVA broke out a cover of Amy Winehouse’s “Rehab.” Check out both below!

Coldplay Creaky Boards Chris Martin Andrew Hoepfner Legend of Zelda Link Plagiarism American Band Stole Song

After launching accusations that Coldplay plagiarized his band’s song, Creaky Boards frontman Andrew Hoepfner has now admitted that the allegations might be unfounded. While Coldplay has categorically denied the allegations, Hoepfner recently posted the following retraction at the end of his viral video:

“Well, it appears that Chris was actually recording in London during my October show and Coldplay demoed Viva La Vida in March 2007, before I taught my band “Songs” in June 2007. What’s most likely is that both Chris and I were inspired by The Legend of Zelda’s “Fairy Theme,” causing us to write similiar songs in 2006. What a coincidince! I guess Nintendo’s the big winner. But isn’t it weird how in 2008, an independent artist can make something in their bedroom that receives almost as much attention as EMI’s biggest marketing push of the year?”

In addition to bestowing a Biggest Douche of 2008 nomination, Christine Tarbet has discovered that an acquaintance of the Creaky Boards frontman is claiming the whole scandal is just an uncool publicity stunt.
