Alex Turner & Lightspeed Champion Cover The Strokes

Pun Lovin’ Criminals Alex Turner Lightspeed Champion

Last week, Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner and Lightspeed Champion’s Dev Hynes peformed together at London’s White Heat as indie supergroup The Pun Lovin’ Criminals. The pair played a covers set featuring Interpol and The Vines, but the highlight of the evening was apparently their performance of The Strokes’ “Reptilia.” For those of us who weren’t there, video of the occasion has thankfully made it onto the internets. While watching the vid, make sure to check out the blasé security guard’s reaction to the distractingly rowdy crowd of limbs and flying fluids.

Of Montreal Cover M.I.A.’s “Jimmy”

Of Montreal Cover M.I.A. Jimmy

It shouldn’t surprise you that Of Montreal has a l’il Bollywood in them - and that’s not a reference to Kevin Barnes’ private parts. Of Montreal has actually done an ace cover of M.I.A.’s “Jimmy,” which you may know was itself a cover of Parvati Khan’s “Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy Aaja” from the 1982 Bollywood movie Disco Dancer. Slower and more hushed than its predecessors, Of Montreal have reworked the song without sacrificing any of the fun or catchiness of the original. Just in time for your weekend playlists, check out all three versions below.

Conan O’Brien Covers “Blue Moon of Kentucky”

Conan O’Brien Covers Bill Monroe’s Blue Moon of Kentuck on Late Night with Conan O’Brien

There may be an ongoing Writer’s Strike, but there’s clearly not a Rockin’ Strike affecting Conan O’Brien. On last Friday’s Late Night, The Cone Zone proved that he’s not “just gonna waste a lot of time with low-concept nonsense” while waiting for his writers to return. Backed by The Max Weinberg 7 and outfitted in country garb, Consie performed a must-see and raucous cover of Bill Monroe’s “Blue Moon of Kentucky.” The performance more than tops his previously mentioned covers and demonstrates why (even without writers) Conan is one of TV’s finest.

New Trailer for Young@Heart (Plus Amazing Coldplay Cover!)

Young@Heart

Check out the trailer below for the upcoming documentary Young@Heart (out on 4.18.08), which follows a Senior Citizen Chorus who has delighted audiences worldwide by performing covers of everyone from The Clash to OutKast to Radiohead. Sounds like an awesome This American Life segment, no? With an average age of 80, Y@H courageously tackle some unexpected tunes and give whole new meanings to familiar lyrics.

An amazing example is the below clip of Y@H’s Fred Knittle performing Coldplay’s “Fix You”. This song was intended to be a duet between Fred and another chorus member, Bob Salvini. A week before the performance, Bob sadly died of a heart attack and Fred (who suffers from congestive heart failure) was left to carry the song on his own. Echoing Josh Cash’s take on “Hurt,” this performance could be used as a litmus test for the human soul.

Top 7 Amy Winehouse Covers of 2007

Top 7 Amy Winehouse Covers of 2007

As easily one of 2007’s most covered artists, perhaps there’s a little Amy Winehouse in all of us. After all, it seems like just about everyone was clamoring to do their best Winehouse this year (except for Winehouse herself, who sadly had to cancel her tour). I’m not just talking about the bad behavior of celebrities. Winehouse seemed to have an omnipresence in the realm of this year’s cover tunes as musician after musician covered tracks from her Grammy-nominated album (with perhaps no track being more popular to redo than “Rehab”). To help you make peace with your inner-Winehouse, Hypeful has compiled the seven best covers of her music from 2007. Although there may be a bit of Winehouse in all of us, Hypeful does not endorse channeling her at any upcoming office holiday parties you might attend.

1. Arctic Monkeys - “You Know I’m No Good”
2. The Rumble Strips - “Back to Black”
3. Paolo Nutini - “Rehab”
4. Hot Hot Heat - “Rehab”
5. Stuart Walker - “Rehab”
6. Timothy Dye - “Rehab”
7. Dewey Cox - “Rehab”
