Update: Once Song OK’d For Oscar

Once Falling Slowly Oscar Nomination

Quick follow-up to yesterday’s post and good news for anyone with ears! An 11th hour decision by the executive committee of the music branch of the Academy decided that in spite of some questions about the validity of “Falling Slowly,” the song is an eligible nominee for best original song. Huzzah!

Once Song Inelligible For Oscar?

Once Falling Slowly Glen Hansard Marketa Irglova Academy Award Oscar nomination snub

A scant two years after the phrase “Academy Award-winners Three 6 Mafia” was born, this year’s Oscar music categories have tragically ruled Jonny Greenwood’s There Will Be Blood score ineligible and ignored Eddie Vedder’s Into the Wild contributions altogether. Now there’s speculation that “Falling Slowly”, written by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, from Once may be ruled ineligible for best original song. The problem stems from the song appearing on two albums (The Swell Season and The Cost) before the movie’s release — a seemingly big no-no according to Academy rules, which state: “An original song consists of words and music, both of which are original and written specifically for the film.” This leaves two big questions remaining:

1. Was “Falling Slowly” written for the movie specifically and then ended up on CDs as the film was being gradually released?
2. Seriously, three song nominations for Enchanted?!?!

Rob’s Party Mix from Cloverfield

Cloverfield Rob’s Going Away Party Mix Soundtrack

After months of viral marketing and a record-setting weekend box office, Cloverfield audiences finally got to see what was capable of decapitating the Statue of Liberty and ruining a hipster loft party all in one evening. Although the camera footage retrieved from the area formerly known as “Central Park” may not have had a proper soundtrack (for obvious reasons), perhaps you caught the rapid-fire snippets of indie-tastic tunes playing in the background of Rob’s farewell party. In case you were too distracted by the scene’s gaggle of ridiculously good-looking hipsters/monster-snacks, Hypeful has assembled “Rob’s Party Mix” to help score your next loft party - just add models, a shaky camcorder, Slusho, and a good city evacuation plan!

(Also, did you happen to catch the remix of Rob’s audio at the end of Cloverfield’s credits?)

Fight Club Musical Headed to Broadway

Fight Club Brad Pitt Tyler Durden

Director David Fincher told MTV.com in a recent interview that he’s interested in marking the 10-year anniversary of Fight Club by bringing his 1999 film to the stage as a musical. Trent Reznor has expressed interest in developing the music and Fight Club author Chuck Palahniuk is keen on the idea. Fincher has previously expressed interest in the project asking, “Can you imagine people in New Jersey paying $120 to drive to the city and watch a musical about anarchy?” In lieu of shirts or programs, maybe they’ll sell Tyler Durden soap as souvenirs!

20 Most Anticipated Films of 2008

If you’re a fan of movies or just need an excuse to consume dumpster-sized buckets of popcorn, there’s good news - 2008 looks to be an absolutely ace year for film! There’s so many reasons to visit the cineplex in the coming year, it may be a good time to invest in Milk Duds and stop worrying about how the writer’s strike is affecting your favorite TV shows. It was tough choosing and there’s almost certainly some great motion pictures flying under the radar, but here are the Top 20 films that Hypeful is most anticipating in 2008 (along with info, trailers, and -of course- accompanying songs that fit each flick’s theme/plot).
