Set your Tivo, kids! From the department of answered prayers comes news that John Oates of Hall & Oates is readying a cartoon about his superpowered moustache entitled J-Stache! As laid out in a two-minute trailer, Oates is portrayed as a modern-day family man who finds himself enticed back to the rock star life by his mustache, which is voiced by comedian Dave Attell. The pilot, which is estimated to be between six and 10 minutes long, is said to feautre the following awesome plot:
Oates is opening a new wing of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame that focuses on mustachioed musicians. Suddenly, a dying David Crosby appears and with his last breath warns Oates of a mysterious secret group of mustache wearers bent on killing other mustache wearers. As actor Tom Selleck attempts to escape from the latest murder scene, Oates summons his own mustache with a fist pump that simultaneously changes his clothes from conservative attire to pink pants and white boots.
Independent publisher Primary Wave Music, which owns a majority stake in most of the biggest hits in the Hall & Oates catalog, is currently shopping the toon, with plans for it to either go straight onto a network or launched via the Web. (Who would’ve thought that Hypeful would post two Hall & Oates-related stories in the span of a week?)

If you’ve been lucky enough to catch safe-sex promoters Vampire Weekend live recently, you may have noticed a couple of new tracks popping up in their setlist - “Little Giant” and “White Sky” . Uh oh - The Creaky Boards are accusing Chris Martin of stealing a song, after the Coldplay frontman allegedly attended a performance by the Brooklyn band at the CMJ music festival last October. The songs at the center of the plagiarism controversy are the Creaky Boards’ über-ironically titled “The Songs I Didn’t Write” and the title track from Coldplay’s latest mega-hit album, “Viva La Vida.” Although Coldplay is adamantly denying the plagiarism allegations, a recently released video by Creaky Boards frontman Andrew Hoepfner indicates his band isn’t giving up its battle against Apple’s dad. Read more about the controversy here, check out Hoepfner’s video below, listen to the two songs below to make your own comparisons, and leave your thoughts in the comments! (Thanks to Vanna for the heads up!)

It’s rare that musical guests perform on The Daily Show (The White Stripes were the first in 2005 and Tom Waits played on Jon Stewart’s birthday in 2006). So, it’s worth noting that Coldplay joined an exclusive club of artists last night when they dropped by the DS studios to perform two tracks (”42″ and “Lost!”) off Viva La Vida. Check it out below!

As his final project for a graphic design course, James Houston grouped together “a collection of old redundant hardware” to perform a remix of the stripper-tested, stripper-approved song “Nude” by Radiohead! The results are both visually and aurally inspired! James may have missed the online remix contest deadline, but he still gets Hypeful’s vote!

Punk/new-wave pioneers Devo are suing McDonald’s after the burger behemoth used the band’s likeness in a Happy Meal toy without permission. Last April, McDonald’s released a set of American Idol-inspired toys in the form of little plastic figures representing various musical genres. At the center of the controversy is the (admittedly) adorable New Wave Nigel (see above photo), who sported an orange jumpsuit, punk shades, and an unmistakable Energy Dome-like hat. Unbeknownst to Mickey D’s, apparently, is the fact that Devo’s “Energy Domes” were designed by bassist Gerald Casale and are-oops-copyrighted and trademarked. Casale added, “We’re in the midst of suing them… they didn’t ask us anything. Plus, we don’t like McDonald’s, and we don’t like American Idol, so we’re doubly offended.” Making matters worse, New Wave Nigel also played a song that Devo claims sounds a bit too much like their own “Doctor Detroit.”

Thom Yorke’s l’il brother Andy Yorke is set to release his debut solo album, Simple (July 14th), following the 2000 disbandment of his group, The Unbelievable Truth. (His former bandmates, Nigel Powell and Jason Moulster, backed him up on this new album, however.) Not surprisingly, Andy sounds a lot like his big bro - but with less falsetto. Bend an ear, won’t you?

I hope you’re sitting down, folks - ’cause we officially have an entry for Best Cover of 2008! When a band as awesome as Spoon attempts a cover of a song as awesome as The Smiths’ “Panic,” it’s amazing that the universe doesn’t collapse on itself from all of the sheer, um, awesomeness. Obviously, this cover has rendered me incoherent, so I’ll let the track speak for itself! Check it out below! (Thanks to YANP for the heads up!)

Hypeful is long overdue for a Band To Watch feature and the summer heat probably has you thirsty for some up-beat, put-the-windows-down songs. Allow me to introduce you to Belaire! Familiar faces to the Austin music scene for the past couple of years, the quartet is made-up of twin sisters Cari and Christa Palazzolo and Voxtrot bandmembers Jason Chronis and Matt Simon.
After releasing their oh-so-catchy debut LP, Exploding, Impacting, last summer, there was some concern about the group’s future due to every bandmember having numerous irons in the fire. (Again, ever heard of a l’il band called Voxtrot?) The good news is that Belaire have recently reformed to get their musical project moving full-time, including focusing on the recording of a new album. In the meantime, last year’s Exploding, Impacting is a perfect summer pop album worth revisiting. It’s bursting with buoyant and colorful twee-electro-pop melodies that will put a smile on your face while outdoor temperatures escalate.
