Hypeful Updates

Sorry for the lack of updates on Hypeful in the past week. No - I haven’t been busy preparing for the Olympics (curling is a winter game, after all…). I’ve just been personally very busy and am working on a redesign for Hypeful that I would like to get up soon. I promise I will be better next week and appreciate your patience! Thanks!

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club BRMC Live Acoustic Club Dada Dallas Texas

About 8 songs into the set, Robert Been said “We’ve been doing the loud thing for about 2 years now, so we wanted to do something different. And we also just wanted to fuck around.” This was some of the most moving fucking around I’ve heard in a while. I haven’t seen Black Rebel Motorcycle Club in a long time. In fact it’s been since Nick Jago had to take off for “personal reasons.” But the notion of seeing the boys on the stripped down stage at Club Dada in Deep Ellum (Dallas) was more than enough to get me out there. The show was incredible alive.

Wilco Jeff Tweedy Chicago Cubs Wrigley Field Baseball Take Me Out to the Ballgame

Wilco followed up their Lollapalooza appearance this weekend by leading Chicago Cubs fans in a super-casual rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.” Tweedy also stuck around for an interview at Wrigley Field where he reveals that his band is planning to play another round of shows featuring their entire catalog sometime in 2009. Cubs win, Cubs win!

Bob Dylan

In anticipation of his upcoming two-disc collection of rarities Tell Tale Signs (Oct. 7th), the always-prolific Bob Dylan has shared a previously unreleased track - “Dreamin’ Of You.” Clocking in at close to six-minutes, “Dreamin’” is certainly a generous share.

The Ugly Suit

Right behind oil and natural gas, music is one of Oklahoma’s greatest natural resources. Seriously, there are so many great bands in the Sooner State right now, it’s easy to feel kind of like a musical Daniel Plainview. Need proof? I proudly submit for your listening enjoyment Oklahoma City’s very-own The Ugly Suit - a bright and sunny sextet that falls nicely somewhere in space between The Flaming Lips and The Shins.

The band’s upcoming self-titled debut (Aug. 19th) is epic, spacey, and gorgeous. The first single, “Chicago,” seems like an appropriate share today (particularly if you were lucky enough to have spent the weekend at Lollapalooza). Everyone from Ryan Adams to Sufjan Stevens has penned odes to Chicago, but The Ugly Suit’s “Chicago” is so sunny and sweet it easily earns a spot on the list of great Second City tracks and makes this OKC band one to watch.

New The Streets - “The Escapist”

The Streets Mike Skinner

The Streets has simultaneously released the first single, “The Escapist,” and its accompanying video from his upcoming album, Everything Is Borrowed. You know what to do…

The Walkmen band You & Me

The Walkmen are pre-releasing their excellent new album You & Me today (three weeks ahead of its official release on August 19th) to help raise money for cancer research. The band is offering You & Me exclusively through AmieStreet.com for a mere $5 and donating the entire amount of each album sold to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

Hypeful strongly recommends you check out You & Me - it’s certainly one of the best albums I have heard in 2008 and this is a great opportunity! For more evidence of the new album’s greatness, simply check out “In The New Year” below.

New Kings of Leon - “Crawl”

Kings of Leon Only By The Night Crawl

The first track from the new Kings Of Leon album, Only by the Night (Sept. 23rd), made its debut on the interwebs today. Although it’s not the official single, “Crawl” is a standard rocker that serves as the first peak at the Followills’ booze-and-pill-fueled fourth album featuring the group rocking out and getting political.

The Morning Benders The Bedroom Covers talking through tin cans

The nice gents of The Morning Benders have decided to thank fans for their support by generously releasing a free album of ace cover songs! Recorded in their apartment and entitled The Bedroom Covers, the collection of songs is as charming as the band itself. They’ve even managed to put a fresh shine on The Cardigan’s “Lovefool,” a song that was so over-saturated twelve years(!) ago I thought I would never want to hear it again. Check out The Bedroom Covers below and definitely bend an ear to their debut full-length, Talking Through Tin Cans, if you haven’t already!

New Datarock - “True Stories”

Datarock True Stories Unplugged Fredrik Saroea Ketil Mosnes

Datarock have included new song “True Stories” in their live setlists during the past year, but I thought it was worth noting that D-Rock’s Fredrik Saroea temporarily dropped the dance-rock bit and performed an unplugged version of the track for Norwegian TV. Check it out below along with a cranked-up version of the song.
