It’s hard to believe, but this summer three of America’s greatest pop icons - Madonna, Michael Jackson, & Prince - are all celebrating their 50th birthday. So, to help celebrate these three legends turning a half century old, Hypeful has assembled 50 cover songs for each artist to share with you! By the time you finish listening to all 150 covers, it might be time to share a golden years collection of Britney, Justin, and Christina.
Happy 50th Birthday, Madonna/Michael/Prince! Enjoy the ultimate pop royalty cover song collection after the jump!
Hypeful doesn’t normally venture into the realm of politics, but a very important issue must be addressed this election year. My adopted home state of Oklahoma has decided to vote on an official Oklahoma Rock Song. After all, OK already has an official folk song (Woody Guthrie’s “Oklahoma Hills”), an official country song (Bob Wills’ “Faded Love”) and an official song-song (Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Oklahoma”). A panel has narrowed down an extensive list of nominees (which included both Hanson and Hinder *shudder*) to the following final 10 song choices:
All-American Rejects - “Move Along”
The Call - “Oklahoma”
The Flaming Lips - “Do You Realize??”
JJ Cale - “After Midnight”
John Moreland & the Black Gold Band - “Endless Oklahoma Sky”
Leon Russell - “Home Sweet Oklahoma”
Mae Axton - “Heartbreak Hotel”
Three Dog Night - “Never Been to Spain”
The Ventures - “Walk, Don’t Run”
Wanda Jackson - “Let’s Have a Party”
From September 1st to November 15th, you can vote online to help decide which song should be presented to the Legislature in 2009. So, without further ado, here’s Hypeful’s no-brain endorsement for your vote for The Flaming Lips.
Five points to Swedish duo First Aid Kit for retreating to the woods (the perfect setting) for a lovely performance of Fleet Foxes’ “Tiger Mountain Peasant Song.” Not only do they absolutely nail this song, they’re apparently also signed to The Knife’s label Rabid Records. So, please take notice…
I’ve had The Spinto Band’s upcoming full length, Moonwink (Oct. 7th), on pretty heavy rotation for the past week. If I would’ve heard it a bit earlier, it would’ve easily made my top 20 of 2008 (so far) list. In prepping for their upcoming release, the band has launched a new website and a series of weekly video shorts dated for consecutive Tuesdays leading up to the release of the Moonwink. If you click on the first half moon featured on the new site, you can see a live rendition of the new track “Later On,” played using a table full of utensils and produce. Also, check out the new track “Summer Grof” below for a taste of the new Spinto goodness!
